NATIONAL PREVENTION WEEK

National Prevention Week is an annual health observance sponsored by The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and is dedicated to increasing public awareness of, and action around, mental health and/or substance use disorders. Each day during National Prevention Week has a theme.

Monday, May 13: Preventing Prescription and Opioid Drug Misuse
Tuesday, May 14: Preventing Underage Drinking and Alcohol Misuse
Wednesday, May 15: Preventing Illicit Drug Use and Youth Marijuana Use
Thursday, May 16: Preventing Youth Tobacco Use
Friday, May 17: Preventing Suicide

The C.A.U.S.E. organizes activities during this week to engage and empower local students and families. During 2018's NPW, there was a health fair, a day of stress relief workshops, and an art contest. May of 2019, The CAUSE supported a mental health day celebrated by all Edison Jr. High (Rock Island) students.

NPW: Mental Health Promotion Day (May 2019)

EJHS celebrated National Prevention Week by having all students participate in Mental Health Promotion Day. The students could either relieve stress through dancing, working on teamwork and communication, or by relaxing in the creative expression area.

NPW: Health Fair (May 2018)

Action Today. Healthier Tomorrow. SAMHSA's National Prevention Week 2018 This year we, The CAUSE, decided to hold a health fair for local students and their families. We had booths covering topics of CPR, heart health, chiropractics, living tobacco free, the effects of alcohol, and focusing on future goals. We are proud to have such an involved community that shares in our goal to engage and empower children.

NPW: Stress Relief Workshops (May 2018)

Action Today. Healthier Tomorrow. To help promote positive mental health, two elementary schools participated in stress relief workshops. Fifth and sixth graders went through mindfulness exercises, yoga poses, problem solving situations, and a Q/A with high school peers.
